After experiencing 'mpv' I will never go back to MPlayerX. It is highly configurable if you don't mind reading the docs and editing a config file. It has many more features than command-line 'mplayer', and is an app, so you can open files from Finder in it. It handles playlists, or you can select a bunch of videos and open them all, like a playlist, with 'CMD-o'. It loads immediately, unlike MPlayerX, which takes at least a minute to load a video. I looked for and found a much better alternative called 'mpv', which is based on 'mplayer', but has many more features. But when I found that the latest version from the developer at codeplex, the same version offered on this site (which has now been replaced by the safe version from sourceforge), contained 16 out of 45 malware positives at Virustotal, that was it. It always took a full minute to open even the smallest video file. In addition to common formats, including: FLAC, MP3, CUE, APE & M4A you can also playback Hi-Res Audio (HD Audio) with up to 24bit/192kHz, at 4 times higher than the standard 44kHz sound resolution. Streaming local video and MP3 tracks to DLNA, Chromecast and AirPlay-enabled devices. Support of 4K, 8K videos, Flash files: FLW, and SWF 3. Online playback of video from Dailymotion and other sites without ads. I had been using MPlayerX for years and never really liked it. Fully utilizing a Mac’s potential, we have developed VOXs Audio Engine in our FLAC Music Player for Mac. Elmedia Player allows you to create playlists from local files and to cast them to Smart TV.
